Ressources phytogénétiques et biotechnologies végétales

Introduction:

This course is designed for Master students, and private professionals of agriculture as well as staff working at institutions of Agriculture Department that have common interest for plant genetic resources, and in particular for crop genetic resources, to characterize, evaluate and valorize those crop genetic resources with the aim for their conservation, better management and use in breeding programs.

The goals: are to give participants concepts and basic knowledge, throught differents chapters and e-resources, the importance of biodiversity of crop genetic resources to contribute to assure food security and sustainable devlopment under climate change and use of molecular biology and genetic engineering; as a complementary approach, to achieve these global strategic goals.

In addition, a short overview of cutting edge technologies in crop biotechnology including application of novel gene-editing technologies is highlighted with the latest applications in this field.

Course description: The course is designed for master students to instigate proper application of basic genetic principals to crop improvement. Topics include mating systems, selection, techniques and methodology involved in breeding self and cross-pollinated crops. Examples on research activities, past and present, reported in the literature on the genetic improvement of self and crosspollinated crops will be given to enhance awareness and better understanding on crops breeding and selection.

The main goal is to give to graduate student’s basic knowledge on plant genetic improvement and breeding methods for self-pollinating species and cross-pollinating species. To this end, the course specific objectives are:

1-To revise main basic principles of plant genetics.

2- To stimulate broader knowledge and understanding of principles and methodologies used in plant genetics.

3- To learn about main strategies and specific selection methods used for plant breeding (from population and variety).

4- To acquire knowledge on crops improvement for important agronomic traits related to productivity, pest and disease resistance, resistance to abiotic stresses, and end-use quality

5-Discuss advanced topics in selection theory and the utilization of molecular markers in selection.
